Lake Taneycomo isn't your average lake - it's actually more like a river thanks to the cold water flowing from Table Rock Dam. We'll be using light tackle and various techniques to entice those wary trout. Depending on the conditions, we might drift fish with artificial lures, toss flies, or soak some bait. Your guide will read the water and adjust tactics to give you the best shot at a limit. Don't worry if you're new to this - we'll walk you through everything from casting to fighting fish.

Rainbow Trout: These feisty fighters are the bread and butter of Lake Taneycomo. They average 12-16 inches, but don't be surprised if you tangle with a 20-incher! Rainbows here are known for their acrobatic jumps and hard runs. They're opportunistic feeders, so we'll try a mix of artificial lures and natural baits to key in on what they're biting. Spring and fall are prime times, but you can catch these beauties year-round.
Brown Trout: The trophy hunters of Lake Taneycomo, brown trout grow big and wise in these waters. While not as numerous as rainbows, they make up for it in size and fight. Browns over 5 pounds are common, with some topping 10 pounds or more. These predators love to ambush baitfish, so we'll often throw larger lures or streamers to tempt them. Early mornings and evenings are magic hours for big browns, especially in the cooler months.
Lake Taneycomo has been on fire lately! Anglers have been hammering limits of chunky rainbows, with quite a few citation-sized browns mixed in. The recent stockings have really boosted numbers, and the fish are fat and healthy. We've been having great luck drifting marabou jigs and soft plastics through the deeper runs. When they're keyed in on emergers, a #16 midge under an indicator has been money. Don't forget to bring your camera - you might just land that new personal best!
Ready to experience some of the best trout fishing Missouri has to offer? This 2-hour trip is the perfect way to scratch that fishing itch without breaking the bank or burning a whole day. Rainbow trout are the stars of Lake Taneycomo. These beauties typically run 12-16 inches, but we occasionally hook into some real lunkers pushing 20+ inches. They love hanging out in the cooler, oxygenated water near the dam, especially around submerged timber and deep pools. Spring and fall are prime seasons, but you can catch rainbows year-round here. Folks love targeting them for their acrobatic fights - these fish will literally leap clear out of the water! They're also excellent eating if you want to keep a few for dinner. For best results, try drifting small jigs or flies near the bottom in faster currents. And here's a local tip: on cloudy days, don't be afraid to fish closer to the surface with dry flies. The trout often get more aggressive then.
Brown trout are the trophy fish of Taneycomo. While not as numerous as rainbows, they grow bigger - we're talking 20-30 inch monsters that'll test your skills and equipment. Browns prefer deeper, slower water and love to hide near structure like fallen trees or undercut banks. Fall is the prime time as they get aggressive before spawning. Anglers chase browns for the challenge and the bragging rights of landing a real giant. They're trickier to fool than rainbows, so patience is key. Try using larger lures or flies that mimic baitfish, especially at dawn and dusk when big browns often feed. One local secret: focus on outside bends of the river where deep holes form - that's where the biggest browns like to lurk.
